Why is Jagannath Rath Yatra Celebrated?

During the yatra, Lord Jagannath, along with Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, is taken out in majestic chariots to journey across the city. Devotees believe that witnessing this divine procession removes sorrows and grants liberation after death. The Padma Purana recounts a special moment when Subhadra expressed her wish to see the city. On this day, the trio travelled from their temple to visit their maternal aunt’s abode—Gundicha Temple—where they stayed for seven days. After the short stay, they returned to their main temple in a concluding ceremony known as Bahuda Yatra.
