As per Hindu tradition, witnessing the Jagannath Rath Yatra confers immense spiritual merit equal to that gained from participating in 1,000 yagnas.

Rath Yatra: Legends and Origins

There is an ancient lore behind Rath Yatra’s origins. There is a legend that Goddess Subhadra once expressed her desire to explore the city. In response, Lord Jagannath, along with Balabhadra and Subhadra, embarked on a chariot journey that included a stop at their aunt Goddess Gundicha’s home, where they rested for seven days. This event marked the inception of the celebrated Jagannath Rath Yatra tradition.

According to another mythological tale, it is said that once the queens of Lord Shri Krishna, conversing with Mother Rohini, expressed their desire to hear the stories of Lord Shri Krishna’s Ras Leela. Concerned that Lord Krishna’s sister Subhadra should not be exposed to these narratives, Mother Rohini decided to send her on the Rath Yatra along with her brothers Balarama and Lord Krishna.

It is said that Narada’s plea to make this divine spectacle an annual event was granted by the gods, thus establishing the revered tradition of the Rath Yatra.
