Why Olympic 20km men’s and women’s race walk events have been delayed?

New Delhi: India were supposed to kick-start Day 6 action at the Paris 2024 Olympics with the 20km men’s and women’s race walk events. August 1, Thursday marks the beginning of the track and field events in Paris and Indian athletes will be straight into the mix. While Akshdeep, Vikash and Paramjeet Singh will feature in the Men’s 20km Race Walk Final, Priyanka Goswami will compete in the Women’s 20m Race Walk Final.

The men’s competition was scheduled to begin at 7.30 am (local time) and 11.00 am (IST) while the women’s event was due to begin at 9.20 am (local time) and 12.50 pm (IST). But both the competitions are yet to begin due to a long delay.

Why 20km men’s and women’s and race walk events have been delayed?

Adverse weather conditions have affected several events in Paris as thunderstorms and heavy rains continue disrupting the sporting action in the French capital. On day one of the athletics competitions, the 20km men’s race walk event was delayed by half an hour due to weather conditions while the women’s event was delayed by 40 minutes.

The storm also disrupted the high-speed rail network on Wednesday affecting the travel plans of thousands of commuters.

Notably, the men’s Olympic triathlon was postponed by a day due to River Seine water pollution levels after heavy rains pelted the French capital since the weekend. France has put $1.5 billion toward cleaning up the Seine but rain washed out training sessions for two successive days due to a rise in pollution level in the river.

Paris was put on second-highest storm alert for Day 4 of the 33rd edition of the Summer Games.

India, on Day 6, will look to add at least one more medal to their tally as Maharastra shooter Swapnil Kusale gets ready to make more shooting history at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The young athlete will compete in the 50m Rifle Three Positions final.

India’s both medals have come in shooting with Manu Bhaker clinching bronze medals in 10m Pistol individual and mixed team events.
