Why This Indian Village is Rooting for Kamala Harris’ Victory?

Thulasendrapuram: Residents of the ancestral village of U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in southern part of India were getting ready to conduct prayers at a Hindu temple on election day, Tuesday, located over 8,000 miles (13,000 km) from Washington.

Kamala’s maternal grandfather, P.V. Gopalan, was born over a century ago in the village of Thulasendrapuram, located in what is now Tamil Nadu state in southern India.

“There will be a special prayer on Tuesday morning at the temple,” a villager G. Manikandan, who runs a store near the temple told to Reuters.

“Celebrations will follow if she wins.”, he added.

At the temple, Kamala’s name is engraved on a stone that acknowledges public donations, alongside her grandfather’s name. Outside, a large banner expresses good wishes for “the daughter of the land” in the election.

P.V. Gopalan and his family moved a few hundred miles to Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, where he served as a senior government official until his retirement.

The village received international attention four years ago when its residents prayed for Kamala’s Democratic Party’s victory in 2020. They celebrated her inauguration as U.S. Vice President by bursting firecrackers and distributing food.

US Elections 2024

Kamala Harris and her Republican opponent, Donald Trump , were working hard to mobilize supporters for the polls in a historically close race, it could take days for the clear winner to emerge.

Kamala would be the first female president in the 248-year history of the United States if she wins, as well as the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the office, if she wins.
