Mumbai: Varuthini Ekadashi, a highly revered day in the Hindu calendar, will be observed on 24 April 2025, as per the tithi that begins at 4:43 PM on 23 April and ends at 2:32 PM on 24 April. Considered one of the most spiritually beneficial Ekadashis, it is also known as the “Ekadashi of all fasts” due to its immense religious merit. Devotees observe a strict fast on this day to seek divine blessings from Lord Vishnu and free themselves from past sins and karmic burdens.

Rooted in the sacred traditions of the Chaitra month’s Krishna Paksha, Varuthini Ekadashi is believed to offer divine protection—true to its name, which means “one who protects.” Fasting on this day is said to ward off misfortune, erase sins, and grant moksha (liberation). The observance is particularly suited for those pursuing discipline, devotion, charity, and celibacy, making it a significant occasion in the spiritual calendar.

When is Varuthini Ekadashi 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Ekadashi tithi will begin at 4:43 PM on 23 April 2025 and conclude at 2:32 PM on 24 April 2025. Based on the sunrise timing, the fast will be observed on 24 April, while the parana (breaking of the fast) should be performed on 25 April, between 5:46 AM and 8:23 AM.

Varuthini Ekadashi Puja Vidhi

On the eve of the fast, devotees should consume satvik (pure vegetarian) food and observe celibacy. On the day of the fast, begin with a purifying bath and take a vow to observe the Ekadashi vrat. Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu by bathing His idol with Ganga water, adorning Him with yellow garments, and offering tulsi leaves, flowers, incense, fruits, and a ghee lamp. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.” Devotees are also encouraged to read scriptures and sing devotional hymns.

The fast is concluded on Dwadashi (the 12th lunar day) by feeding Brahmins, offering donations (daan), and breaking the fast after sunrise.

Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi

The spiritual benefits of observing Varuthini Ekadashi are immense. Scriptures state that it cleanses the soul, eradicates sins, and paves the way for good fortune and liberation. The merit earned from this fast is believed to be equivalent to that of ten thousand years of austerity. Acts of charity on this day, such as gau daan (cow donation), anna daan (food donation), and kanyadaan (giving a daughter in marriage), are said to yield countless blessings.
