New Delhi: Right-arm English fast bowler Chris Woakes, who’s known for his superlative pace bowling, had to turn into a spinner on the second day of the third Test match against Sri Lanka at the Kennington Oval. On Saturday, Woakes, in a rare scene, was seen bowling some off-spin deliveries, albeit for a brief time, during the match played in London stadium. But why was Woakes forced to bowl spin deliveries?
The rare occurrence that took place was due to the bad light at the stadium during the match overs. The incident took place in the 7th over of Sri Lanka’s innings rights after he claimed the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne. The umpires informed England skipper Ollie Pope about the bad light conditions at the Oval after the paceman bowled two deliveries in his 4th over.

Because of this reason, the fast bowler had to turn into a off-spinner for the remainder of the over. He bowled four spin balls just to complete the over on time and also got hit for a four on a shorter-length delivery. However, in the next over which was bowled by Gus Atkinson, the light conditions improved, allowing the bowler to bowl pace. When Woakes returned for his over after Atkinson’s, the all-rounder was also given the green signal to continue bowling pace.
The bad light conditions continuously affected the game as something of a similar sort of situation happened on the first day of the match. The play had to be stopped multiple times before stumps being called. Meanwhile at stumps on the second day, Sri Lanka had scored 211 for 5 in reply to England’s 325 all out. Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva, who both smashed half centuries for their team, will resume the innings on the third day of the five-day affair.
