New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni missed back-to-back practice sessions for his team ahead of their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Dhoni’s absence in CSK’s practice sessions on Monday and Tuesday has sparked concerns regarding his availability for the KKR clash.
Dhoni has been dealing with a long-standing knee issue for which he underwent surgery in 2023. He was also recently seen struggling to walk and limping in CSK’s team hotel after a game. However, CSK bowling coach Eric Simons dismissed any concerns regarding Dhoni’s fitness and said the 43-year-old will be fit to play against KKR.
“Yes, he’s expected to play tomorrow,” Simons said during the pre-match press conference ahead of CSK’s clash against KKR in Kolkata.
“With regard to MS, he knows his situation very well. He knows where he is. In terms of his preparations, he always works very hard at the beginning of a tournament and then allows himself to taper off because he gets himself in a space where he’s ready. So, no issues. He just knows when he is prepared and when he’s not,” he added.
MS Dhoni struggles in IPL 2025
Dhoni has not had the best of seasons with the bat, struggling to finish matches for his team and has also failed to revive CSK’s fortunes after taking over captaincy from Ruturaj Gaikwad, who got injured earlier this season. While he was expected to lead the team to a turnaround, CSK were eliminated early from the race for the playoffs after losing 8 out of their first ten matches.
The five-time champions are currently reeling at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table with just 4 points from 11 matches this season. CSK have managed only two victories in what has been a disastrous campaign for the Men in Yellow. With the bat, Dhoni has managed 163 runs in 11 matches this season at an average of 23.29 and a strike rate of 148.18.
Speculations are once again rife regarding Dhoni’s future in the IPL, with rumours suggesting that the CSK skipper hang up his boots at the end of the season and not return to play for the five-time champions next season.
