New Delhi: The ninth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup is set to get underway from Friday, July 19. The multi-nation tournament will be played in Sri Lanka with all matches taking place in Dambulla. Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will be looking to defend their title successfully and extend their dominance in the competition.
The tournament is set to be played in T20 format this year and India will start as the favourites for the title. Harmanpreet & Co. will open their campaign with a blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on Friday, July 19. The high-profile clash will set the tone for the rest of the tournament and India will be hoping to get off to a winning start.
The eight-team tournament will serve as preparatory ground for the Women’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place later this year. The eight teams in the tournament have been divided into two groups of four each for the group stage. India are in Group A alongside Pakistan, Nepal and the UAE. The second group consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The final of the tournament will be played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on July 28. India are the most successful team in the history of the tournament with seven titles to their name. India defeated Sri Lanka in the final of the last edition in 2022 to win their 7th trophy.
