New Delhi: World champion Russian skating couple Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who were returning from a National Development Camp, would have never imagined that an aeroplane journey back to their abode would be their last. The skating couple, who won the world championships in pairs figure skating back in 1994, were among the victims on the plane that crashed just above Washington DC on Wednesday evening.
The American airlines plane, with 64 passengers and crew, was en route Washington DC from Kansas, when it suffered a fatal mid-air collision with a US Army helicopter. After the collision, the plane fell into the water and as reported by the BBC, as many as 19 bodies were recovered from the ice cold Potomac river the following day, with others still to be found.
US Figure Skating body confirms multiple skaters on board
As per a statement issued by the United States figure skating body, multiple skaters were on board the plane which fell into the river after a deadly crash against a helicopter. As per the statement by the body, many athletes, coaches and family members were returning from the National Development Camp held in conjunction with the US Figure Skating Championships in Kansas when the tragic crash took place.
While some of the bodies have been recovered and a search is on for the rest, officials have stated that there might not be any survivors. After getting married to each other and bagging the world championships title, both Shishkova and Naumov lived in the United States as per reports since 1998, where they kept themselves engaged by training young ice skaters. The couple was returning with group of young skaters, with multiple media outlets confirming the number as 13.
As per reports, the couple’s son, Maxim, also a skater, may also have been on the plane, Russia’s TASS and RIA news agencies reported. Inna Volyanskaya, a former skater for the Soviet Union, was also confirmed to be on board the plane.
