World Diabetes Day theme for 2024: Bridging gaps in diabetes care

New Delhi: World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14 every year. It was started in 1991 by the International Diabetes Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO). Diabetes is a long-term disease in which the pancreas does not make enough insulin or any at all. This condition can cause serious health problems. The day is observed to raise awareness and educate people about diabetes.

World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14 every year, and each year, a different theme is chosen for the day. This year’s theme is “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps.”

World Diabetes Day 2024: What is the theme for this year?

This year’s theme —”Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps”—focuses on the collective commitment to overcome any obstacle in diabetes care and on ensuring that every person diagnosed with diabetes has access to affordable and high-quality treatment.

The theme “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps” focuses on making healthcare inclusive. It encourages cooperation among governments, health organisations, and communities to tackle differences in diabetes care. This approach aims to lower diabetes risk factors and support people living with diabetes.

Educational programmes, events and different campaigns will inspire communities and individuals to take action for a healthier future. The goal is to close the treatment gap and improve the lives of millions affected by diabetes.

Global Diabetes Coverage Targets by WHO

In 2022, World Health Organization (WHO) Member States endorsed five global diabetes coverage targets that are to be achieved by 2030:

1) Eighty per cent of people with diabetes know they have it.

2) Eighty per cent of those diagnosed with diabetes manage their blood sugar well.

3) Eighty per cent of diagnosed diabetics keep their blood pressure under control.

4) Sixty per cent of people with diabetes who are 40 years or older take statins.

5) Everyone with type 1 diabetes can get affordable insulin and blood glucose monitoring.

World Diabetes Day, marked annually on November 14, brings attention to diabetes awareness. The 2024 theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” emphasises overcoming healthcare obstacles to make diabetes care accessible, affordable, and inclusive for all.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
