World Environment Day 2024: What is the significance of this day?

New Delhi: In an era when climate change and global warming threaten our planet’s existence, conserving the environment is paramount. Over the years, the environment has suffered numerous damaging effects due to human beings’ activities and ignorance. But now, there is time to protect our environment and save our planet from destruction.

Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is celebrated to make people aware of the need to protect the environment and take necessary actions to conserve it. Apart from the governments of numerous nations worldwide, the day is also supported by many non-governmental organizations and business entities. It is an important day for the United Nations to support the environment.

The need to celebrate World Environment Day

The World Environment Day is being held every year on June 5 since 1973 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is the biggest platform worldwide to increase awareness about the importance of the environment among the public and millions of people celebrate the day.

Ecosystems are being destroyed and facing massive threats all over the world. As per the UN data, up to 40 per cent of the land of this planet is degraded. Since 2000, droughts have increased by 29 per cent affecting a massive population. The destruction of the ecosystem is affecting the planet as well, leading to climate change and global warming.

That is why, this year’s World Environment Day focuses on the restoration of lands and stopping desertification and deforestation. It is time for us to grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. And on this day, it is important to make everyone aware of the need to protect the environment and not to take it for granted. The day gives everyone a chance to spread awareness campaigns on the issues ailing the environment like cutting down of trees, marine pollution and wildlife crimes. More than 130 nations participate to celebrate this day and businesses, non-government organizations, communities and government entities raise their voice for environmental causes.
