World Mosquito Day: Gynae shares prenatal tips for mums-to-be to reduce dengue risk

New Delhi: During pregnancy, women are more susceptible to many diseases, because at this time their immune system becomes weak, and physical and hormonal changes occur. Serious illness affects not only the mother but also the baby growing in the womb. Diseases like dengue can prove to be particularly dangerous for pregnant women. The role of prenatal care has become even more important. Therefore, Prenatal care is very important for pregnant women as it ensures the safety of their health and the baby.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Teena Thomas, Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Apollo Cradle, explained how dengue can affect pregnant women and what can be done to reduce their risk of the infection.

Impact of dengue on pregnant women

Dengue infection can cause serious health problems in pregnant women, such as high fever, bleeding, and organ damage. Further, it can also lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, or problems with the baby’s growth. The newborn baby is vulnerable to the dengue virus, which can pass through the placenta.

Best Practices for Expecting Mothers to Prevent and Manage Dengue

Early identification and counseling: Pregnant women should go for regular prenatal checkups. It is important to identify the symptoms of dengue early so that the doctor can provide detailed information about ways to avoid dengue.
Taking care of cleanliness: Dengue mosquitoes often breed in stagnant water, so prevent water stagnation around the house so that mosquitoes do not breed. Do not allow water to accumulate in flower vases, coolers, and other places.
Mosquito prevention: Pregnant women need to be cautious of mosquitoes and should wear long-sleeved clothes, and use mosquito nets in their room, apart from this, mosquito bites can be avoided by using anti-mosquito body lotion cream.
Balanced diet and hydration: Pregnant women must consider a balanced diet such as seasonal fruits, green leafy vegetables, etc. There might be a lack of water in the body during pregnancy. In this situation, regular intake of fluids and a balanced diet is necessary.
Blood tests and monitoring: Regular blood tests are important for pregnant women in prenatal care to help identify dengue symptoms. Additionally, monitoring of platelet count and other important parameters is also necessary as a drop in platelets during dengue can be dangerous.
Rest: If a pregnant woman shows symptoms of dengue, she needs to relax and complete rest. Pregnant women need to stay in a comfortable and safe environment so that there is no risk to her and her unborn baby’s health.

Conclusion

Dengue is a very dangerous disease, if not treated at the right time, it can prove fatal at times. Women must take medical consultations from time to time during pregnancy, which helps in identifying many other diseases apart from dengue so that complications can be prevented by starting treatment on time.
