New Delhi: Oral health is vital to one’s overall well-being. However, many people suffer from common dental diseases that can affect their quality of life due to negligence. Here are five prevalent oral diseases and how they can be treated effectively. Everyone needs to take utmost care of dental hygiene. Dr Binota Singh, Consultant Dentist, Medicover Hospitals, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai spoke about the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and treating common diseases.
Currently, a large number of people are suffering from oral diseases due to lack of proper hygiene. It is a known fact that a diet high in sugar, tobacco and alcohol use, improper brushing techniques, genetics, hormonal changes, periodontal disease, and diabetes can also invite oral diseases. One has to stay vigilant when it comes to maintaining overall well-being. These are five common oral health diseases and know how they are treated.
Without these 5 diseases and seeking timely attention
- Tooth decay (Cavities): This happens when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode tooth enamel, causing cavities. Poor oral hygiene, sugary foods, and plaque buildup often cause it. So, the cavities can be treated by removing the decayed portion of the tooth and doing the root canal. This treatment will be advised to children as well as adults.
- Gum disease (Periodontitis): It begins as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and can progress to periodontitis, which affects the bone supporting the teeth. It leads to gum recession, bleeding, and tooth loss if untreated. Having unmanaged gum disease can be embarrassing and take a toll on one’s self-esteem. Hence, pay timely attention to it. Mild gum disease can be managed with regular cleanings and improved oral hygiene. Advanced cases may require deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), antibiotics, or even surgery to restore gum health and manage gum disease.
- Oral thrush (Candidiasis): Did you know? Oral thrush is a fungal infection caused by Candida yeast, inviting white patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, and throat. It is commonly seen in those people with weakened immune systems, diabetes, or ones using antibiotics or dentures. Antifungal medications and tablets are prescribed to tackle the infection. Maintaining good oral hygiene and managing underlying health problems can help one to deal with oral thrush.
- Oral cancer: Affects the lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat, often caused by tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, or HPV infection. Symptoms are persistent sores, lumps, and difficulty swallowing. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies.
- Tooth sensitivity: This is seen when the enamel wears down, exposing the underlying dentin, and leading to discomfort when one eats hot, cold, or acidic foods. To manage it, opt for desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride treatments, and dental bonding can help manage sensitivity. In severe cases, gum grafting or a root canal may be required to tackle it. So, go for regular dental visits and manage problems with the help of an expert.
