New Delhi: Every year on July 15, the World Youth Skills Day is celebrated. It is a fact universally acknowledged that in every society, the youth form the future and take up the onus to keep the wheels of civilisation moving. But to do that, they must be equipped with proper skills and training. And this is where the World Youth Skills Day comes into play. In this article, we will learn more about this day.
How did World Youth Skills Day begin and what is its importance?
The United Nations General Assembly in 2014 declared July 15 as World Youth Skills Day. The main objective of this day is to highlight and celebrate the immense need to arm young people with skills so that they can easily find jobs, and decent work and make their fortune in entrepreneurship. Over the years, the day has given us a unique chance for dialogue between young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, organisations of employers and workers, firms, development partners and policymakers. In today’s world, skills are of immense importance as we are on a path of transition towards a sustainable model of development.
When it comes to skill development, TVET is gaining increasing importance as it has become necessary for jobs, decent work and entrepreneurship; the elimination of gender disparity and ensuring access for the vulnerable. The TVET can solve several demands when it comes to social, financial and environmental aspects by ensuring that youth and adults are equipped with proper skills. Not only it will help them find jobs but will also promote inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economic growth. Also, it will support transitions to environmental sustainability and green economies.
Today, the world is plagued by several problems many of them hampering the lives of the youths. Full-blown wars and violent conflicts are going on which have disrupted education and stability and have given birth to an environment where negativity is thriving. Social unrest has led to persistent economic inequality which is also threatening the overall stability of societies. Hence, youths must be equipped with the necessary skills to foster a peaceful culture, make them responsible global citizens and promote sustainable development to build a future which will be more inclusive, just, and sustainable for all.
