New Delhi: Diabetes is the leading cause of multiple chronic health diseases across the world. For many years researchers have been trying to solve the mystery of its cure but they haven’t been able to get any luck. But recently in a breakthrough achievement, the first-ever cure for diabetes through cell therapy has been found. A 59-year-old patient who underwent an innovative cell transplant in 2021 has been medication-free since 2022, according to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
As per the report, this experimental procedure involved creating an artificial form of the insulin-producing cells found in the pancreas that helps to regulate blood sugar levels. For 25 years the patient had been living with type 2 diabetes and had nearly lost all body function of the islet cells. The patient was at risk for serious problems that would require multiple daily insulin injections to avoid diabetic coma.
How the researchers find a cure for diabetes?
In July 2021, the patient was given the cell transplant, and after this he was free from external insulin within eleven weeks and his oral medication dose was slowly reduced until it was completely stopped a year later.
Following later check-ups, it was found that the patient’s pancreatic islet function was effectively restored. Now the patient has been insulin-free for 33 months. The medical marvel was achieved by a team of doctors and researchers from the Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, the Centre for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Renji Hospital. The findings were published in the Journal Cell Discovery on April 30.
As per the researchers, this breakthrough has marked significant progress in the emerging field of regenerative medicine, where the body’s regenerative capabilities are harnessed to treat diseases. Now the technology has advanced and it has pushed the boundaries in the sector of regenerative medicine for treating diabetes.
