New Delhi: Australian star batter Travis Head has come out in support of Indian captain Rohit Sharma over his decision to stay back and prioritise time with his family after the birth of his newborn son. Indian skipper Rohit was blessed with a baby boy last week and is likely to miss the 1st Test against Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Rohit is still in Mumbai and has reportedly told the BCCI that he needs some more time with his family before he can travel to Australia. He will miss the 1st Test of the blockbuster five-match series which is set to get underway in Perth on Friday, November 22. When asked about Rohit’s decision, Head said he would have done the same if he was in the Indian captain’s place.
There have been mixed responses from fans, former cricketers and experts over Rohit’s decision to skip the 1st Test to be with his wife Ritika Sajdeh and his family. However, Head believes the Indian captain has made the right call.
“I 100 percent support his decision. I would do the same thing in same situation. We sacrifice a lot of things as cricketers, we do live a very privileged life and get looked after but on the flip side, we do miss some important milestones. I would’ve done the same thing if I was in that position. He has made the right call,” Head told RevSportz.
Head too had skipped Australia’s recently concluded white-ball series against Pakistan to be with his wife Jess, who was expecting their second child. Head didn’t take part in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan and subsequently also missed the three-match T20I series against the visitors which concluded on Monday, November 18.
“I’ll probably make decisions in the future around family more, and what drives me to play is probably more my family and my teammates,” Head added.
Earlier, former Australia captain Michael Clarke too had supported Rohit’s decision to miss the 1st Test against Australia after the birth of his son. Stating that not even a World Cup victory can equate the joy of becoming a father, Clarke had said it was the happiest day in his life when his daughter was born.
Rohit Sharma expected to return for 2nd Test
As per reports, Rohit is likely to join the rest of the Indian squad in Australia before the 2nd Test in Adelaide and will be available for selection. There is a 9-day gap between the first two Test matches between India and Australia and Rohit will get enough time to fine-tune his preparations before the second Test match in Adelaiade which gets underway on December 06.
