New Delhi: Reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Gujarat Giants (GG) in the opening match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 on Friday (February 14) at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. This will be the first time that the tournament has been expanded to Gujarat after the first season was staged completely in Mumbai followed by Bengaluru and Delhi jointly hosting the second edition.
RCB have been marred with injury setbacks and the unavailability of key players who were vital in the team’s success in the previous season. New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine has opted out of the season to focus on her well-being as she takes a break from the game to decide her future.
The spinners were a potent force in the team’s title-winning campaign last season with Shreyanka Patil, Asha Sobhana and Sophie Molineux collectively claimed 37 wickets. The left-arm spinner has suffered a knee injury and also ruled out of the RCB campaign. England all-rounder Kate Cross will miss the season owing to a back injury.
Shreyanka, who picked up a finger injury, last season, hasn’t played competitive cricket since India’s loss to Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, who was the team’s top run-getter, came to the season but not without injury concerns (hip injury during Women’s Ashes). However, there will be opportunities for the young players to grab with Prema Rawat, Joshitha VJ, Raghvi Bist, and Jagravi Pawar in the -pipeline to showcase their skills.
England opener Danielle Wyatt-Hodge, a veteran of 170 T20Is, is set to make her WPL debut, most probably she will open the innings with captain Smriti Mandhana.
Gujarat Giants will be led by Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner after the responsibility was shared by Sneh Rana and Beth Mooney in the last two seasons. West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin’s return to the squad, after the drama in the first season, will provide a huge boost at the top as well as middle order given the versatility of the player. Young Austaliian batter Phoebe Litchfield will also be an exciting prospect to keep a tab on.
