New Delhi: Team India captain Rohit Sharma paid a heartfelt tribute to his former opening partner Shikhar Dhawan after he bid farewell to international and domestic cricket on Saturday. The pair of Rohit and Dhawan is well known for their exploits in ODI cricket, being hailed as one of the most destructive opening pairs of Indian cricket. As Dhawan called time on his career, Rohit had a perfect message for his “jatt” friend.
Dhawan posted a minute-long video on his social media handles in which he thanked his fans, his coaches, and his teammates for their continuous backing. While many former and current Indian cricketers conveyed their wishes to Dhawan for his second phase of life, his two very close friends Kohli and Rohit were missed by the fans. With Kohli posting a message about Dhawan, Rohit too penned a short yet powerful note for his compatriot.

Rohit, Dhawan as India openers
Rohit referred to his time with Dhawan as openers for the Indian cricket team during which they reigned in the international circuit as batting powerhouses, strengthening the Men in Blue’s top order. Dhawan and Rohit shared a great camaraderie both on and off the field and it was a treat to watch them bat together, perfectly managing every condition and playing according to the demands of the situation. They supported each other pretty well from both ends and that is what Rohit highlighted in his note.
The explosive opening pair took bowlers to the cleaners in some fashion due to which they were hailed as the next best opening pair after Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Dhawan said, “Rohit Sharma’s bonding with the team is his specialty, that is a great attribute of him.” He weighed in on the widespread acclaim Rohit has garnered for his team management and leadership skills and of course for his bond with his teammates.
Dhawan and Rohit played for India as an opening pair in 117 ODI innings in which they scored 5193 runs at an average of 45.15, smashing 18 hundred and 15 half-centuries combinedly. They can surely be hailed as one of the greatest opening pair ever in ODI history.
