Zelensky Claims War Would ‘End Sooner’ Under Trump as U.S. President

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia’s war against his country will “end sooner” once Donald Trump assumes office as the president of the United States (US).

“It is certain that the war will end sooner with the policies of the team that will now lead the White House. This is their approach, their promise to their citizens.” Zelensky said while speaking to a Ukrainian media (Suspline)

Zelensky said he had a “constructive exchange” with Trump after his victory in the U.S. presidential election during their phone call.

“The war will end, but we don’t know the exact date,” Zelensky added.

He did not mention if Trump had made any demands concerning potential talks with Russia, but noted that he had not received any statements from him that contradicted Ukraine’s stance.

“must do everything so that this war ends next year, ends through diplomatic means”. Zelensky said.

Zelensky mentioned that U.S. legislation permits him to meet with Trump only after his inauguration in January.

Trump on Russia-Ukraine War

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since late February 2022. During his U.S. presidential campaign, Donald Trump criticized the tens of billions of dollars in aid provided to Ukraine by the current U.S. administration since the conflict began.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours if he became president, though he never provided details on how he would accomplish this.

Trump’s priority is to end the war and halt what he describes as a drain on U.S. resources, particularly in the form of military aid to Ukraine.
