1. Zodiac Killer
In the late 1960s, a serial killer who remains unidentified spread terror in Northern California. Famously known as the Zodiac Killer, the person killed five known victims in the San Francisco Bay Area between December 1968 and October 1969. Among his victims, he targeted three young couples and a lone male cab driver. The case of the Zodiac Killer has been dubbed the most famous unsolved murder case in the history of the US. The intensity of the case has made it immensely famous in popular culture.
2. Jack the Ripper
The question of who was Jack the Ripper is something that the detectives and crime experts are trying to answer to this day. The unidentified serial killer was active in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The murderer is also known as the Whitechapel Murderer and Leather Apron. The person normally preyed on women prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London. The murders were heinous and the Scotland Yard and the media outlets received numerous letters from people claiming to be the murderer. To date, Jack the Ripper remains one of the most famous unsolved cases in the world.
3. Black Dahlia
On January 15, 1947, an American woman named Elizabeth Short was found murdered in the Leimert Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The heinous nature of the crime made the case highly publicized. The murderer, among other things, mutilated her corpse and bisected it at the waist. During its extensive investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) produced over 150 suspects but failed to make any arrests. The crime remains unsolved and it has had a lasting cultural intrigue, generating public speculation and various theories. There have been numerous books and films based on the murder.
4. Disappearance of D.B. Cooper
A man named Daniel Cooper, on November 24, 1971, bought a one-way ticket on Northwest Airlines on Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle. As per reports, he was a person in his mid-40s who wore a business suit, and an overcoat. Also, he carried a briefcase and a brown paper bag. After boarding the flight, he revealed that he had a bomb in his briefcase. He demanded $200,000 as a ransom for everyone on the flight and released all passengers and some of the crew after he claimed that his demand was met. He told the remaining crew to refuel the plane and chart a course for Mexico City and shockingly jumped out of the plane’s rear door with two of the parachutes and the money. The police never managed to find him.
5. Somerton Beach Mystery
A body was found in December 1948 on Adelaide’s Somerton Beach in Australia. It belonged to a man dressed in a suit with polished shoes. In the autopsy, no trace of poison was found and the man could not be identified due to a lack of a wallet or any type of identification. His fingerprints were also unidentifiable. Nobody could identify the body even after the police put a photo of it in the newspapers. The police were never able to identify the body.
6. JonBenét Ramsey death
On December 26, 1996, in Colorado, Patsy Ramsey claimed she had discovered a ransom note for her daughter JonBenét Ramsey who was just 6 years old at their home. The police were called and the case was reported. Tragically, the dead body of the girl was found in the basement less than eight hours later. The death of the child was ruled as homicide and while the case caused nationwide and media interest, the case has not been solved to this day.
7. Hinterkaifeck murders
The Hinterkaifeck murders took place on March 31, 1922, when six people of a family who lived at a small Bavarian farmstead were found to be murdered. All of them were killed with a mattock, also known as a ‘grub axe’. According to reports, after the murders, the perpetrator(s) lived with the dead bodies for three days and carried on with the work of the farm. The murders are considered one of the most gruesome and puzzling unsolved crimes in Germany.
