New Delhi: India’s sports landscape has undergone a phenomenal transformation over the past 11 years, marked by increased participation, improved infrastructure, and a surge in international achievements. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has placed significant emphasis on youth development and sports, and over the years, it has ensured that India’s sporting potential is nurtured at every level.
India boasts 65% of its population under the age of 35, which gives it a golden opportunity to represent the country on the international stage and dominate in all sports. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recognised this and has consistently focused on promoting talent and building infrastructure across the country. The government’s record allocation of Rs 3,794 crores for the fiscal year 2025-26 is a testament to its commitment.
A significant amount of this budget, almost Rs 2,191.01 crore, has been dedicated to Central Sector Schemes, with the flagship Khelo India Programme receiving Rs 1,000 crore alone. This marks a massive leap in the funds allocation from 2014-15, showcasing an impressive 130.9% increase in funding over the past decade.
Key schemes introduced over 11 years
Over the years Modi government has introduced various schemes to promote sports in India and increase participation in events to help the raw talent grow and take India to new heights. The major schemes introduced over the years include-
Khelo India Scheme:
The scheme was launched in 2016-17, and since then, this program has promoted grassroots sports and excellence in both urban and rural areas. Since its inception, the scheme has approved 326 new infrastructure projects, established 1,045 Khelo India Centres and supported 2,845 athletes with coaching, equipment and medical care.
Khelo India Games:
These annual competitions give young athletes from across the country a platform to compete and showcase their skills. From the Khelo India Youth Games to the Para and Winter Games, over 50,000 athletes have participated in 17 editions so far.
KIRTI (Khelo India Rising Talent Identification):
KIRTI focuses on identifying young talent aged 9 to 18 and uses advanced IT tools and standardised assessments to find and nurture the next generation of sports stars.
Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS):
This initiative supports elite athletes preparing for the Olympics and Paralympics by providing monthly allowances and personalised training. It has played a crucial role in India’s success at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
Fit India Movement:
This movement was launched to promote physical fitness and to make it a part of our daily lives. Over the years, the event witnessed mass participation through events like Fit India Carnivals and online fitness sessions for families.
International achievements
India’s performances on the global stage have seen a remarkable rise from two Olympic medals in Rio 2016 to seven in Tokyo 2020 and six in Paris 2024. Indian athletes have made the nation proud in different international events from time to time. In the Paralympics, medal tallies soared from four in Rio to a record 29 in Paris 2024.
The Asian and Commonwealth Games have also witnessed increased medal hauls and participation. In fact, in the 2023 Asian Games, India sent its largest-ever contingent of 655 athletes to Hangzhou and returned with a historic 107 medals, including 28 golds, 38 silvers and 41 bronzes.
