New Delhi: Mumbai youngster Ayush Mhatre became the youngest player to score 150+ in List A cricket during the Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Nagaland in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The explosive opener set a new world record, surpassing compatriot Yashasvi Jaiswal’s feat.
At 17 years and 168 days, Mhatre bettered the previous record set by Jaiswal, who was 17 years and 291 days when he reached the milestone for Mumbai against Jharkhand in the 2019 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Mhatre’s record-breaking Vijay Hazare Trophy performance
Mhatre scored 181 runs off 117 balls including 11 sixes and 15 fours as Mumbai notched up a massive total of 403 for seven in their 50 overs.
Mhatre, who made his debut for Mumbai earlier this season, has become a household name in no time. The talented batter, who lives in the Virar suburb of Mumbai, has been a regular member of the domestic heavyweights across formats ever since his debut this season.
A meteoric rise: Ayush Mhatre’s journey in domestic cricket
Mhatre was in Mumbai’s Irani Cup-winning team which defeated the Rest of India to win the trophy after a gap of 27 years in October. He played a superb 52-run knock on his Ranji Trophy debut which ended in vain as Mumbai lost the season opener to Baroda.
Mhatre continued his superb scoring run, scoring a stunning 176 off 232 balls – studded with 22 fours and four sixes – as Mumbai crushed Maharashtra by nine wickets in their second game.
Mhatre represented India in the U-19 Asia Cup and scored crucial fifties (54 and 67 not out) against Japan and UAE, but was dismissed cheaply in the final which India lost to Bangladesh.
The right-handed batter missed Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title triumph but returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a 78-run knock in a high-scoring contest against Karnataka.
Mhatre went unsold in the IPL mega-auction as no team showed interest in the young batter. Despite impressing MS Dhoni and participating in a trial with the Yellow Army, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) rejected the batter.
17-year-old Ayush Mhatre shattered the world record for the youngest player to score 150+ runs in List A cricket during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
