3rd medal in sight: How Manu Bhaker can become India’s most successful Olympian at Paris 2024

3rd medal in sight: How Manu Bhaker can become India’s most successful Olympian at Paris 2024

New Delhi: Manu Bhaker has become the cynosure of all eyes after her double-medal feat at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old shooter from Jhajjar, Haryana became the first Indian woman to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics on Tuesday, July 30.

After bagging a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event, Manu combined with her partner Sarabjot Singh to win another bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event on Tuesday. Manu and Sarabjot defeated the South Korean pair of Lee Won-ho and Oh Ye-jin 16-10 in the bronze medal match of the mixed team 10m air pistol event to bag India’s second medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Manu became the first Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win two medals in the same edition of the Olympics. India’s first-ever Olympic medallist Norman Pritchard won two medals at the 1904 Olympics to open the country’s tally at the Games. However, no Indian athletes had managed to win multiple medals in the same edition post Independence.

Manu also became only the 4th Indian to win two individual medals in Olympics history after Pritchard, Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu. The 22-year-old shooter now has a chance to rewrite more history at the Paris Games by adding a potential third medal to her cabinet. Manu is on the verge of becoming India’s most successful Olympian of all time at Paris 2024.

Manu Bhaker on cusp of becoming India’s most successful Olympian

It is a dream for any athlete to win a medal at the Olympics. While Manu has already fulfilled that dream with not just 1 but two medals in the current edition in Paris, she is far from done yet. Manu will compete in one more individual shooting category at the ongoing Games and has a chance to add a third medal to her tally which will see her become India’s most successful Olympian of all time.

With a bronze in women’s 10m air pistol and another in the mixed team 10m air pistol, Manu has already become the first woman to win two medals in a single edition. But she will soon compete in the women’s 25m air pistol event where she will have a chance to become the first Indian to win three medals in a single edition of the Games, and the first from the country to win three Olympic medals overall.

No Indian athlete has ever won more than two medals at the Olympics. Along with Manu, ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu also has a chance to become India’s most successful Olympian at the Paris Games. Sindhu has two medals (silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020) under her belt and can become the first Indian to win three Olympic medals if she can finish on the podium in women’s singled badminton in the ongoing Paris Games.

When will Manu Bhaker play in women’s 25m air pistol event?

Manu Bhaker will be eyeing a third medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 when she competes in the qualification round of the women’s 25m air pistol event on Friday, August 02. If qualified, she will battle it out for a medal in the final of the event on August 03.
