New Delhi: Paris successfully hosted the 2024 Olympics which concluded on Sunday, August 11 after a star-studded closing ceremony. USA topped the medals table at the Paris Games, edging China on the final day to finish with a total of 126 medals, including 40 gold medals. The Paris Olympics witnessed the emergence of some new champions, who rose to the limelight and made the world take notice with their heroics.
The Games also some new sports and events being introduced as breaking made its debut at the Olympics. With the conclusion of the Paris Games, the attention has already shifted towards the next edition which is scheduled to be staged in Los Angeles, US. The 2028 Olympics in LA will feature a host of new sporting events as a total of six new sports will be added to the roster.
The biggest addition will be cricket as the sport will mark its return to the Olympics for the first time since 1900. Cricket was last played at the Olympics in Paris in 1900 when Gret Britain won the gold medal. That was the only edition when cricket was part of the Olympics. However, in 2028, both men’s and women’s cricket will be part of the LA Olympics.
Apart from cricket, squash, which is already part of the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will also make its debut at the LA Olympics. Flag Football, Lacrosse, Baseball and Softball are the other new sports that will be included at the LA Olympics 2028.

Which sports might get scrapped from LA Olympics 2028?
Breaking, which made its debut at the Paris Olympics 2024, will not be part of the roster at the LA Olympics 2028. Breakdancer Philip Kim of Canada won the first gold medal in breakdancing at the Paris Games after beating France’s Dany Dann in the final. However, he won’t be seen in action in LA in 2028 as breaking was excluded from the LA roster even before the start of the Paris Olympics.
Apart from breaking, the future of boxing is also under threat. Boxing is currently not part of the LA Olympics due to the suspension of its governing body, the International Boxing Association (IBA). IBA was suspended by the IOC citing administrative and financial irregularities. A final decision on boxing’s future at the LA Olympics might be taken next year.
