4 defeats in a row! Rohit Sharma hits new low as captain after Australia crush India

New Delhi: After their 295-run drubbing in the series opener in Perth, Australia bounced back in style to thrash India by 10 wickets in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide to level the five-match series 1-1. India were thoroughly outplayed with the bat and the ball as Australia continued their dominant run in pink-ball Test matches with yet another emphatic victory.

Rohit Sharma hit a new low as captain following India’s crushing defeat in Adelaide as he suffered his 4th consecutive Test defeat while leading the team. It was a forgetful outing for Rohit, who made his comeback in the Adelaide Test after skipping the 1st Test in Perth due to the birth of his son. The Indian captain failed to turn up with the bat and was heavily criticised for his poor captaincy.

Rohit Sharma joins unwanted list

The 10-wicket loss in Adelaide meant Rohit has now lost four consecutive Test matches for India as captain. India were shockingly whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand at home in their last Test assignment before heading to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It was India’s first Test series defeat at home in over a decade and their first-ever against New Zealand at home.

India managed to sweep aside concerns from their home drubbing and made an emphatic start to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by hammering Australia by 295 runs in the 1st Test in Perth. Jasprit Bumrah, who stood in as captain in Rohit’s absence, did a fabulous job as captain as the visitors made a mockery of the Aussies to get off to a perfect start in the series.

However, India failed to maintain their winning run in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide as Rohit endured his 4th straight defeat as captain. Rohit has now joined an unwanted list of Indian captains with the most consecutive defeats in Test matches.

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who lost six Tests in a row in 1967-68 is on the top of the list followed by Sachin Tendulkar, who lost five consecutive Test matches as captain in 1999-2000. Rohit joined the likes of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli at the joint-third spot with 4 Test losses in a row as captain.

Indian captains with most consecutive defeats in Tests:

6 – Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (1967-68)
5 – Sachin Tendulkar (1999-00)
4 – Datta Gaekwad (1959)
4 – MS Dhoni (2011)
4 – MS Dhoni (2014)
4 – Virat Kohli (2020-21)
4 – Rohit Sharma (2024) *
