New Delhi: Carlo Ancelotti is all set to leave Real Madrid, with the club and the Italian manager reaching a verbal agreement over the terms of his departure. The talks had been ongoing for weeks, mainly around setting his salary for the remaining year of his contract, which was extended in December 2023 until 2026. While nothing has been signed yet, an official announcement could arrive soon, possibly right after Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona.
The 65-year-old’s next stop looks set to be the Brazil national team. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has long admired the Madrid manager, with its president even calling him his “dream” coach. Negotiations between Ancelotti and the CBF have been happening since March, but the deal hit a pause while the Italian sorted things out with Madrid. With that almost settled, Brazil are preparing to bring him in before the World Cup qualifiers in June against Ecuador and Paraguay.

Madrid’s next move
The move means Los Blancos will need to find a new manager before the Club World Cup, which is set to take place in the United States starting from June 14. Bayern Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner to land the permanent job. Internally, director of football Santiago Solari is viewed as a more likely interim option.
A legacy worth celebrating
Ancelotti has had two successful spells at Madrid, returning in 2021 after first managing them between 2013 and 2015. Under his guidance, Madrid won two La Liga titles and lifted the Champions League trophy three times. With a record 15 trophies to his name at the club, he is their most successful manager ever. Madrid plans to give him a farewell fitting for his legacy.
A season of near misses for Madrid
This campaign has been disappointing by Madrid’s standards. The club crashed out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals against Arsenal, lost the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona, and currently trails Barca in the La Liga title race. Sunday’s Clasico could be Ancelotti’s final bow, closing one chapter as another begins in South America.
