4 overs, 4 maidens, 3 wickets: Lockie Ferguson creates history with incredible spell against PNG

New Delhi: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson bowled a sensational spell in his side’s clash against Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the T20 World Cup 2024 on Monday, June 17. Ferguson bowled as many as four back-to-back maiden overs and picked up three wickets in a memorable spell to create the record for the most economical spell in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Ferguson was introduced into the attack in the fifth over of New Zealand’s final group-stage clash against PNG at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. He started with a wicket-maiden over and there was no looking back as the right-arm pacer ran riot against the PNG batting line-up. He dismissed PNG skipper Assad Bala in his first over to open his account before returning to pile more misery on the opponents in the 7th over.

The right-arm pacer bowled six straight dot balls to Sese Bau in his second over to make it two maiden overs in a row. Ferguson mixed up his pace and variations well to keep Sese Bau from scoring a run against him. He returned to bowl his third in the 12th over and went on to trap Charles Amini lbw to bag his second wicket.

He once again conceded 0 runs off his third over to make it three maiden overs in a row. The New Zealand pacer cleaned Chad Soper on the second delivery of his final 4th over before bowling four more dot balls to create history. Ferguson became the first bowler in the history of T20 World Cup to concede no runs in a 4-over spell while also recording the most economical bowling spell in the tournament.

Ferguson finished with stunning figures of 3/0 off his 4 overs and became only the second bowler after Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar to bowl four maidens in a T20I match. Zafar has achieved the extraordinary feat during a T20 World Cup qualifier match against Panama. He had picked up two wickets in his spell with four maidens.

Ferguson bettered the Canada star’s record with three wickets in his sensational spell against Papua New Guinea on Monday. His devastating spell helped New Zealand bowl out PNG for a paltry 78 runs in 19.4 overs and register a comfortable win to end the tournament on a high.
