New Delhi: Testosterone, an important hormone produced by the testicles, is necessary for men’s physical, sexual, and mental health. It controls critical functions such as libido, muscle mass, bone density, and mood. A drop in testosterone levels below the optimal range can only lead to a range of health issues that are often ignored or masked by other diseases. Understanding the early warning signs and knowing how to recover from low testosterone levels is crucial so that normal well-being and quality of life can be restored.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Madhu Juneja, Director – OBGY and IVF, Sahyadri Hospitals Momstory, Hadapsar Annexe, Pune, listed the many red flags of low testosterone levels.

  1. Low Libido and Sexual Dysfunction: A frequent indicator of low testosterone level is lowered sexual desire and performance. Sexual activities are less appealing for men, and there may be some difficulties in achieving or sustaining an erection. Testosterone is one of the key hormones in sexual health, affecting desire and aiding with the release of nitric oxide in the bloodstream which makes erections possible.
  2. Fatigue and Decreased Energy Levels: A persistent low energy level can indicate low testosterone levels. In this instance, men may find it difficult to get out of bed due to fatigue (stay asleep) struggle to concentrate, and have an overall sense of sluggishness. Testosterone is critical in energy production. It does this by supporting mitochondrial function and muscle strength, which enables sustained energy throughout the day. It may lead to night-time waking and day sleepiness

Loss of Muscle Mass and Increased Fat Deposition: There may be a noticeable decline in muscle strength and size which is usually accompanied by an increase in body fat, especially around the abdominal region. This is often an indicator of low testosterone levels. Testosterone synthesis aids in protein metabolism and fat which is essential in aiding to lean muscle mass and keeping a good body shape. This occurs because testosterone is linked to the regulation of brain chemicals like serotonin, which are crucial for stabilizing mood and promoting a sense of well-being.
  5. Reduced Bone Density and Joint Pain: Men with low testosterone may experience frequent fractures, joint discomfort, and symptoms of weakened bones, such as osteoporosis or osteopenia. Testosterone is crucial for maintaining bone mineral density and promoting calcium absorption, both of which are necessary for strong and healthy bones.

Recovering from low testosterone is indeed possible and can be achieved by lifestyle changes, improving sleep, stress management, and even some medical/supplemental help. A testosterone-boosting diet that includes more zinc (nuts, seeds, seafood), vitamin D (fortified cereals, and fatty fish), and healthy fats (like avocados and olive oil) will help in hormone production. Foods to avoid are excessive caffeine, sugars, and processed food. Some ways to boost testosterone levels are regular cardiovascular exercise as well as strength training and high-intensity training.

A healthy amount of body weight is crucial as well because too much body fat, especially visceral, will lower testosterone levels. In addition, improved recovery can be achieved by sleeping in a quiet, dark room for about 7-8 hours so that we can avoid screens and caffeine before bedtime. Managing chronic stress through mindfulness, yoga, or meditation is crucial, as elevated cortisol levels suppress testosterone production. It is suggested to avoid smoking, alcohol, and xenobiotics (environmental toxins from plastics /binders etc). In cases of confirmed low testosterone, Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), including injectable testosterone, topical gels, or oral options, may be recommended under medical supervision. Supplements like vitamin D3, zinc, magnesium, and Ashwagandha can further enhance testosterone levels and alleviate symptoms.
