New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batters Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh went hammer and tongs in their side’s opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Vizag on Monday. Pooran and Marsh slammed half-centuries apiece and lit up the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium with their sensational strokeplay.
Marsh opened the batting with Aiden Markram to get LSG off to a flying start with a 46-run stand for the first wicket. The Australian all-rounder then joined hands with Pooran to take the Delhi Capitals bowlers to the cleaners. The duo played at a similar tempo, bashing every bowler as they made a mockery of the hosts’ bowling attack.
Marsh hammered 72 off just 36 balls laced with six sixes and as many fours while Pooran scored a quickfire 75 off just 30 balls studded with 7 sixes and 6 fours. Pooran went berserk in the 13 over of LSG’s innings as he smashed four consecutive sixes followed by a boundary in an over against Tristan Stubbs. It rained sixes in Vizag as Pooran flexed his muscles in the middle.
Stubbs started the over with a dot ball before Pooran smashed a tossed-up delivery over deep backward square leg for a six. He launched the next one over long on for another six to complete his fifty off just 24 balls before smashing two more sixes off the next two balls to make it four in a row. Pooran finished the over with a four to get 28 runs off the over from Stubbs.

Pooran was on 42 off 21 balls before Stubbs over and raced to 70 off just 27 balls by the end of it. He perished after scoring 75 off 30 balls as he was cleaned up by a searing delivery from Mitchell Starc on the penultimate ball off the 15th over. Nonetheless, the West Indies power-hitter did his job for the team and played a thunderous knock to set the stage for a big total of his team.
Lucknow Super Giants post 209/8 in 20 overs
LSG rode on impressive knocks from Marsh and Pooran to post a strong total of 209 runs in 20 overs against Delhi Capitals in Vizag. A total of 250 looked possible when Pooran was going all guns blazing in the middle. However, his dismissal allowed the DC bowlers to make a comeback in the game and put a check on the scoring rate.
David Miller played a fine cameo of 19-ball 27 but Lucknow Super Giants kept losing wickets on the other end to finish with 209 runs on the board in 20 overs. LSG will be hoping to defend the total successfully to get off to a winning start in the tournament.
