London: A massive fire gripped London’s iconic building ‘Somerset House’ on the Strand on Saturday causing a huge plume of smoke in the sky. The fire which broke out on Saturday morning spread rapidly and engulfed the building in no time. On information, the local police and concerned authorities along with firefighters rushed to the spot and efforts were initiated to bring the fire under control.
According to the sources, over 70 firefighters are deployed to douse the fire. It is being ensured that the fire shouldn’t spread further. No injuries or casualties have been reported so far in the fire incident.
According to the reports, emergency services rushed to Somerset House to tackle the blaze with the cause of the fire so far unknown. A warning has been issued by the fire service that the fire will impact traffic in the area around the Strand.
Huge plumes of smoke can be seen billowing up into the sky from the centre of London with people taking to social media to enquire about the cause of the blaze.
London Fire Service said that 32-meter ladders have been sent to the scene to help crews tackle the blaze with more than 10 calls received about the fire from shortly before midday. There are crews from Soho, Dowgate, Islington and surrounding fire stations attending the scene.
It stated: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been deployed to a fire at Somerset House. Two of the Brigade’s 32m ladders have been sent to the scene to support firefighting operations. Traffic in the surrounding area will be impacted as crews respond.
“The Brigade’s Control Officers have taken over ten calls reporting the fire, with the first received at 1159. Crews from Soho, Dowgate, Islington and surrounding fire stations are attending the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
The Courtauld is home to one of the world’s great art collections, located in the magnificent historical setting of Somerset House. But one person responding to the fears on social media that it could be affected said: “Looks like it’s in the West Wing, so away from the Courtauld.”
