New Delhi: With the Modi government announcing the 8th Pay Commission, the central government employees are now eagerly awaiting the appointment of panel chief and finalisation of the salary hike, House Rent Allowance (HRA) structure and other benefits.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 16, 2025 confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission for central government employees. The pay commissions are very crucial as they determine salary structures, allowances, and other benefits for government employees.
8th Pay Commission: Central Govt employees demand 100% salary hike
News9live.com spoke to a few central government employees to gauge their mood and expectations after the announcement of the 8th Pay Commission. Commenting on the same, Abhay Gupta (name changed), who is associated with the Income Tax department, appealed to the government to give a 100 per cent salary hike. He also said that the Pay Commission should be constituted every 5 years in place of 10 years.
Meanwhile, Lakshmi Jha (name changed), working with the India Post (Post Office) also demanded the salary to be doubled and pay commissions to be set up every five or 6 years. She went on to say that the Pay Commission should ensure that allowances are not removed and HRA percentage should also not be reduced. The Gratuity ceiling should be increased, the central government employee added.
There is a demand from the central government employees that there should be a rise in the fitment factor ranging from 2.28 to 2.86. In the 7th Pay Commission central government employees’ union had demanded a rise of 3.68 in fitment factor, but fitment factor rise of 2.57 was approved. The Dearness Allowance also became zero. The HRA was also reduced to 24 per cent of basic from 30 per cent.
It may be noted that the union representing the employees has been long demanding that pay commission should be constituted every 5 years rather than 10 years.
