New Delhi: American legend Katie Ledecky further established her credentials as one of the greatest swimmers of all time, as she etched her name in history books on Saturday, with her ninth gold medal in the Olympics at the Paris Games. Ledecky won her fourth straight Olympic gold medal in the women’s 800m freestyle event.
The American ace swimmer finished the race in 8 minutes and 11.04 seconds to clinch the 800m freestyle title at the Paris Games. She scripted history with the gold medal as Ledecky equalled the world record for most gold medals won by any female athlete in the history of the Olympics.
With her ninth gold medal overall, Ledecky went on level terms with former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina who finished her career with a total of nine gold medals at the Olympics. Ledecky has so far won 4 medals at the Paris Olympics, including two gold and her overall medals tally at the Olympics stands at 14.
Katie Ledecky emulates Michael Phelps
Ledecky also emulated the legendary Michael Phelps with her gold medal in the women’s 800m freestyle event at the Paris Olympics. It was her fourth straight gold medal in the event, making her only the second swimmer after Phelps to have won four gold medals in the same event at the Olympics. Phelps holds the record for most Olympic medals by an athlete with a total of 28 medals, including 23 gold medals.
“The four-times record is the one that means the most to me. 3 August is the day I won in 2012, and I didn’t want 3 August to be a day I didn’t like moving forward. I put a lot of pressure on myself, so I’m happy I got the job done,” Ledecky said after winning her 4th gold medal in the 800m freestyle event.
4 medals in Paris Olympics 2024
Ledecky has already won a total of 4 medals at the Paris Olympics 2024. She clinched gold medals in the 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle events while bagging silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay. She has also won a bronze medal in women’s 400m freestyle.
Ledecky is the most decorated female Olympian in the USA’s history with a staggering 9 gold medals and a total of 14 Olympic medals. But the 27-year-old is far from done yet and is already aiming for more glory at the LA Games in 2028.
