New Delhi: Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is prepared to lead India in the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth on Friday. With regular captain Rohit Sharma making himself unavailable for selection after the birth of his second child, the onus has fell on the ace speedster to not just provide early breakthroughs with lethal spells but resuscitate the whole team after coming from an unprecedented whitewash against New Zealand at home.
The stakes in the Australia Test series are high and Bumrah isn’t someone strange to pressure. When the Ahmedabad-born player turned 25 in 2018, he played his first Test match in Australia (in Adelaide) exactly 11 months after making red-ball debut for India. At that point, his role was to complement senior pacers Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami to totter the Australian batters.
Six years later, with a far-reaching experience backed by the gumption to lead the charge, Bumrah is set to extend his prolific run with the red ball. The captaincy hat will only add another layer of excitement to see him work on areas he is yet to discover. He has just the led the team once in England in 2022, which the visitors lost in a high-octane run-chase in Birmingham.
Before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, we take a look at Bumrah’s numbers against Australia in Australia.
