Cricket Australia to pay tribute to late Phillip Hughes ahead of IND vs AUS Adelaide Test

New Delhi: Cricket Australia will commemorate Phillip Hughes, the late Australian cricketer, on his 10-year anniversary and has planned a series of initiatives to mark the tragic death of the player. The initiative includes a tribute to him before the start of the second Test between India and Australia in Adelaide scheduled from December 6 to 10.

Not just during the BGT Test but the CA will also honour Hughes during the upcoming three Sheffield Shield games as players will wear black armbands flags will be flying at half-mast. A promising left-handed batter who played 26 Tests, Hughes passed away just three days before his 26th birthday in 2014 after being hit by a bouncer during a domestic game.

He was representing South Australia and while on the crease, he was hit on an uncovered area below his left ear while going for a hook shot against pacer Sean Abbott at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Despite wearing a helmet, the impact turned out to be fatal as he collapsed on the pitch and died two days later in St. Vincent’s Hospital on November 27, 2014.

“We understand this will be a time of reflection for the many people who knew and admired Phillip Hughes. We wanted to ensure that the Hughes family, particularly, were comfortable with any commemorations and that we celebrate Phillip’s life and incredible achievements appropriately,” Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Nick Hockley said on Friday.

A special documentary has been produced on Hughes by the home association which will be broadcasted ahead of the second Test, as part of a two-week commemoration programme. A moment of silence will be observed before the play on day four of all the matches.

Hughes battles

Hughes was batting on 63 when he collapsed before receiving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and was subsequently taken to Sydney’s St. Vincent’s Hospital. He underwent surgery and was placed in an induced coma. The cricketer didn’t regain consciousness after enduring the blow and died two days later. The southpaw was viewed as one of the promising Aussie cricketers when the team was going through a transitional phase.

During the Australia vs India Test in Adelaide that followed his death a decade ago, he was named as the hosts’ 13th player. He even received 63 (the score he was batting at in his last match) seconds of applause ahead of the match.
