BGT: Jasprit Bumrah claims fifer, becomes first captain after 17 years to achieve milestone in Australia

New Delhi: Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Saturday became the first visiting captain in Test cricket to claim a five-wicket haul during the second day of the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Bumrah dismissed Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey on the first ball of his over (28th over and second over of the day). A short of the length delivery coupled with the extra bounce, moved the ball away and Carey went for a gentle push only to poke the ball through to his counterpart Rishabh Pant behind the wickets.

This was the 11th fifer for the Indian pacer and his third in Australia. This time it was his first as a captain, making him first from a visiting side after Anil Kumble in Melbourne in the 2007-2008 Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Bumrah continued his ferocious spell from where he left on Friday, leaving the hosts in tatters. On Day 1, he broke the backbone of Australian batting order, accounting for the dismissals of Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and Pat Cummins. He got the likes of Khawaja and Smith on back-to-back deliveries.
