New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul created history on Sunday in the first Test match against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Both batters played stunning shots against Australian bowlers and forged a 201-run partnership for the first wicket.
They registered the highest opening wicket partnership for an Indian pair in Test Cricket in Australia, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s 191-run stand for the first wicket in the 1986 Sydney Test. It is also the first time that an Indian opening duo crossed the 200-run mark on Australian soil.
Their sensational partnership laid the foundation for The Men in Blue after the first innings collapse. Jaiswal scored his maiden Test hundred in Australia, his fourth overall. KL Rahul also amassed 77 runs. Mitchell Starc broke the 201-run opening partnership as KL Rahul knicked the last ball of the 63rd over to the keeper.

Third highest opening partnership for India in SENA Countries
After being bundled out for 150 runs in the first innings, India made a great comeback into the match, courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah’s fifer which restricted Australia to just 104 runs, giving India a crucial 46-run lead. Rahul and Jaiswal batted cautiously against the new ball but shifted gears and punished the Australian bowlers with an array of strokes. Their brilliant partnership also ended India’s 19-year-long wait for a 100+ opening stand on Australian soil, Virender Sehwag and Akash Chopra stitched 123-run opening stand at Sydney in 2004.
