Shardul Thakur records joint-most worst bowling figures in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Shardul Thakur records joint-most worst bowling figures in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

New Delhi: Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur on Friday was found with an unwanted T20 cricket record. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match between Kerala and Mumbai held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on November 29, the Mumbai pacer conceded 69 runs from his four-over spell to record the joint-worst figures in India’s premier T20 competition.

Shardul has now joined Arunachal Pradesh’s Ramesh Rahul to hold the record for most runs conceded in an innings in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Rahul yielded 69 runs against Haryana without picking up any wicket on November 25 in Mumbai. The previous record for the most expensive figures in the tournament was named after former Hyderabad pacer Pagadala Naidu, who leaked 67 runs for one wicket against Mumbai in the 2010 SMAT edition.

Although Shardul started his spell by castling Kerala captain Sanju Samson in the first over of the match, the Mumbai pacer was taken to cleaners by Salman Nizar (99) and Rohan Kunnummal (87) as Kerala posted their highest total of 234 for 4 in the SMAT history.

This dismal show by the Indian all-rounder comes as another setback after going unsold in the recent IPL 2025 mega auction. He hasn’t been in India’s reckoning since December 2023 with his last appearance coming on the Test tour of South Africa. Before that, the 33-year-old was part of India’s squad for the 2023 World Cup played on home soil.

Kerala thump Mumbai by 43 runs

Mumbai did give a fightback to Kerala’s gigantic total riding on the fabulous knocks from Nazir and Kunnumal. Prithvi Shaw started off well with 13-ball 23 before holing out to the substitute fielder Maruthungal Ajinas off MD Nidheesh’s bowling.

Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer fired 32 runs off 18 balls, powering two sixes and as many boundaries. He perished at the halfway mark. Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane remained unbeaten of 68 from 35 balls, but the determined efforts went in vain as Mumbai finished at 191 for 9 at the conclusion of the second innings.

Shardul Thakur has now joined Arunachal Pradesh’s Ramesh Rahul to hold the record for most runs conceded in an innings in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
