New Delhi: India’s premier women’s shuttler PV Sindhu added South Korean Lee Hyun Il in her coaching team after appointing Anup Sridhar though both have been hired on an interim basis depending on results.
Aiming for her third successive Olympic medal, Sindhu’s campaign for ended with a round of 16 loss to China’s He Bingjiao after which she hasn’t returned to action yet.
The 29-year-old is poised to return to the court at the Finland Open and Denmark Open next month and has sought the services of Sridhar and Lee till December 2024 with results determining the extent of their association further.
Former World No.1L Lee was and Sindhu’s teammate at the Premier Badminton League and is a bronze medallist at the 2006 BWF World Championships and part of South Korea’s Asian Games team gold medals in 2002 and 2014.
Sindhu has been under the tutelage of several coaches over the years and was guided by former top ranked men’s singles star Prakash Padukone and Vimal Kumar at Paris 2024.
“I’m thrilled to have Anup and Lee Hyun Il joining my team in this crucial period. Anup’s understanding of Indian badminton and his strategic approach have always impressed me, and I look forward to working closely with him,” Sindhu said in a release.
“Having Lee, with his meticulous preparation and legendary experience, is an honour. I’ve always respected his attention to detail, and I can’t wait to learn from him during these next few months.”
‘Easy decision to work with Sindhu’
Lee said he didn’t have to think twice to join Sindhu’s camp following the end Agus Dwi Santoso’s coaching contract with Sports Authority of India.
“Working with PV Sindhu was an easy decision. Our previous partnership in the PBL highlighted her fierce determination and exceptional talent. I am excited to contribute to her growth and success in the upcoming tournaments,” he said.
