New Delhi: The number of women taxpayers has significantly increased in India. According to the Lok Sabha data, 22.9 million women filed Income-Tax Returns in assessment year (AY) 2023-24 as compared to 18.3 million in AY20, which shows a spike of 25.3 per cent.
Maharashtra recorded the highest increase in women ITR filers. Data showed that 29.94 lakh women taxpayers filed their ITRs in AY 2019-20, which rose to 36.83 lakh in AY 2023-24. Uttar Pradesh was placed second which recorded a jump of 29 per cent increase in women tax filers. In AY 2019-20 15.81 women taxpayers filed ITRs, it increased to 20.43 lakh in AY 2023-24. Gujarat recorded a jump of 24 per cent in women ITR filers.
In AY 2023-24 22.50 lakh women filed their ITRs in Gujarat. Ladakh (205), Lakshadweep (1,125) and Mizoram (2,090) recorded lowest women tax filers. In Ladakh, there were just 30 women ITR filers in AY 2019-20 which increased seven times to 205 in AY 2023-24.
CBDT extends tax return filing deadline to Dec 15
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the Income Tax Return filing deadline to December 15 for the financial year 2023-24, an official order said. The ITR filing deadline has been extended for taxpayers who have international transactions and are required to furnish reports under Section 92E.
“The due date for furnishing the return of income under section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 in the case of an assessee who is required to furnish a report referred to in section 92E, is November 30,” the official release said.
