New Delhi: The AFC Champions League is witnessing a thrilling battle for supremacy with Saudi Arabian, Japanese and Chinese clubs making headlines. Saudi Arabian teams have taken charge in the tournament’s western zone. Global stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Riyad Mahrez, and Aleksandar Mitrovic are guiding the clubs with their European experience.. Meanwhile, Japanese clubs are asserting dominance in the eastern zone while Chinese sides are mounting a promising comeback.
In the western zone, Saudi clubs Al-Ahli, Al-Hilal, and Al-Nassr are currently leading the standings, showcasing the nation’s footballing prowess. With 24 teams divided equally between east and west these clubs have already secured their places in the pre-quarterfinals.
Despite their star-studded lineups, the road has been challenging. The AFC Champions League is inspired by the expanded group stage of the UEFA Champions League and now requires teams to navigate eight group-stage games instead of six. This increased workload demands effective squad rotation and tactical depth even for well funded clubs.
AFC has confirmed details around the new AFC Champions League Elite to kick-off later this year.

“The tournament is very difficult, it is similar to the UEFA Champions League,” remarked Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus. “Pressure and fatigue are inevitable for big clubs competing in multiple tournaments, but we are ready for the challenge.”
Revival of Chinese clubs and Japanese dominance in the East
In East Asia, Chinese clubs are enjoying a resurgence after years of financial instability and the collapse of several teams. With domestic seasons concluded teams like Shanghai Shenhua, Shanghai Port, and Shandong Taishan are among the top eight each amassing seven points.
Shandong Taishan assistant coach Tang Tian reflected the optimism surrounding Chinese football, saying, “Our preparations and efforts are at 100%. We are determined to perform well in the upcoming matches.” The national team’s recent victories in World Cup qualifiers have further boosted morale suggesting a brighter future for Chinese football in the coming years.

Japanese teams are setting the standard in the eastern zone with Vissel Kobe and Kawasaki Frontale leading the pack. Vissel Kobe spearheaded by coach Takayuki Yoshida can confirm its spot in the knockout stages with a win over South Korea’s Pohang Steelers.
“When the competition began, we knew three or four wins would be necessary to progress,” Yoshida explained. “Now we are close, but the match against Pohang will be crucial.”
Kawasaki Frontale and Yokohama F. Marinos are also strong contenders. Yokohama’s Australian coach John Hutchinson was appointed in July and has revitalized the team. Under his guidance they have won five consecutive games including a crucial victory over Pohang, climbing to third place in their Champions League group.
Hutchinson expressed satisfaction with the team’s recent performances: “I’m happy with the boys and their performance. We’re focused on winning the next game against Central Coast Mariners to strengthen our position.”
