New Delhi: West Indies bowlers Jayden Seales and Kevin Sinclair were fined part of their matches on Wednesday after being adjudged guilty of violating International Cricket Council’s code of conduct in their recent second Test match against Bangladesh.
Seales was fined 25 per cent of his match fee after being held guilty of breaching article 2.20 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players relating to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.
As it was his first offence in a two-year period, he was also handed a demerit point that was added to Seales’ disciplinary record.
Seales was pulled up for making an “inappropriate and overly aggressive gesture” towards Bangladesh’s dressing room after taking a wicket in the first over of Bangladesh’s second innings.
Sinclair was docked 15 per cent of his match fee after breaching article 2.4 of the code of conduct that relates to “disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an international match”.
He was also handed a demerit point for his first offence in a 24-month period after Sinclair ignored the instructions of the on-field umpires to stop using language deemed “aggressive and harsh” towards Bangladesh batters.
Admission of guilt
Both the West Indies players pleaded guilty and accepted the sanctions levied by match referer Jeff Crowe. Hence no formal hearing was conducted after on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Kumar Dharmasena, third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Zahid Bassarath brought forth the charges.
After a two-year period the demerit points are expunged from a players record. Four or more demerit points within that period leads to a player being suspended.
A players gets banned from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first, on accumulation of two suspension points.
For level 1 breaches, players get a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee along with one or two demerit points.
Bangladesh won the second Test to level the series 1-1.
