New Delhi: WWE made a historic decision to move to Netflix on January 6, 2025. After moving to Netflix, Indian fans could not stream WWE shows on Netflix because of the media rights of Sony Sports Network.
Sony Sports Network acquired WWE rights in 2020 for an estimated amount of $180-200 million in a five-year deal. The rights will expire in March 2025 and it is almost confirmed that Sony Sports Network is not interested in renewing the WWE media rights for further years.
WWE media rights are set to transfer to Netflix India after Sony Network’s contract expires. Now after confirming the news, Netflix India posted a video on their social media to confirm the date for WWE RAW premier on Netflix in India.
WWE’s rights will expire on 31 March 2025 and after that, the next WWE RAW will air on April 1. So WWE RAW’s first episode will stream on Netflix India on April 1, Tuesday.
WWE RAW will only stream on Netflix, there is no update on where Smackdown and NXT will stream in India after Sony’s contract expires.
There will be a big question if WWE RAW switched to Netflix, will the viewership of WWE shows go downhill as Television played a big role in Indian market and kids in India generally watch WWE shows on TV and they did not have access to Netflix.
Netflix also had not much success in streaming live sports. They streamed Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s boxing fight as their first live event and the bout got crashed multiple times in their platform.
Netflix is also a subscription-based platform that will not be accessible to more fans in India.
