New Delhi: Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh survived an lbw appeal as an umpiring gaffe by the third umpire sparked controversy on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test between India and Australia in Adelaide. India lost a review controversially after the third umpire deemed Marsh not out without checking ball tracking following an lbw appeal from the visitors.
The incident happened on the 3rd delivery of the 58th over of Australia’s innings when Marsh came down the track against Ashwin and tried to defend the ball on his front foot. The batter was beaten as the ball hit his pad. Ashwin and the other Indian players appealed for an lbw which was turned down by the on-field umpire following which the visitors decided to opt for a review.
The third umpire ended up making a blunder as he decided to deem Marsh not out after spotting a spike on the Snickometer without checking ball tracking. The zoomed-out version of the incident during the replays, however, showed it was pad first and not bat. The third umpire’s decision to not follow the protocol and check ball tracking left many baffled as Marsh was eventually deemed not out with India losing their review.
The replays of the ball tracking later confirmed Marsh would have still been not out as the impact was umpire’s call which was not out. However, India wouldn’t have lost an important review. Third umpire Rciahrd Kettlebrough explained his decision by stating that he had no conclusive evidence whether the ball had hit the pad or the bat first.

R Ashwin dismisses Mitchell Marsh on 9
Marsh was yet to open his account when he survived the lbw call against Ashwin and was later dismissed on 9 runs by the Indian off-spinner in the 64th over of Australia’s first innings. Marsh was caught by Rishabh Pant after edging one off Ashwin’s bowling. However, the replays later showed it was a flat line when the ball passed through Marsh’s bat and the noise was due to his bat flicking the pads.
Nonetheless, Marsh walked away thinking he had edged it, handing India a crucial breakthrough at an important stage in the Test match.
