Explained! Pep Guardiola responds to Jose Mourinho as the feud takes a new turn

New Delhi: The feud between the former Chelsea and Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho and Manchester City long serving manager Pep Guardiola has taken a rather interesting turn. It has barely been a week since Liverpool managed to pull off a dominant performance against Pep’s Manchester City, as the defending champions bowed down to the Reds. However, there were certain controversies that took place after Pep Guardiola taunted the Liverpool fans, reminding them about the six Premier League titles that he has won with City.

Guardiola was reminded of the three-finger salute Mourinho gave as manager of Manchester United following a loss to Tottenham Hotspur at home back in August 2018 when he displayed six fingers during his team’s 2-0 loss at Anfield on Sunday. It became more and more popular in social media, where the fans went all in, commenting stuff like, “Manchester heritage” and many more, indicating how this one taunt reminded everyone of this incident that happened back in 2018.

How did Mourinho react to this situation?

When Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, pointed out that he had twice as many Premier League titles as his longtime adversary, José Mourinho responded angrily. In regard to the more than 100 Premier League accusations City faces for potential financial regulation violations, Mourinho stated that he had won his three titles with Chelsea “cleanly and fairly.”

After learning of the Fenerbahce head coach’s remarks, Guardiola claimed that although he had been kidding, Mourinho’s three titles were “fact” and that the Portuguese is among those who want to see City demoted to “League One or the Conference.”

🚨 José Mourinho: “Pep Guardiola said something to me yesterday… he won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly”.

“I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits”.

After Guardiola was questioned this week about the six fingers he raised after last Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool, symbolizing his six league titles at City, Mourinho made a statement. He was reminded of Mourinho’s three-finger salute following Manchester United’s defeat to Tottenham in August 2018, which seemed to be the start of the Portuguese team’s demise there.

“I hope not in my case,” Guardiola responded after this topic was brought on. “Maybe we are similar like José, but he won three and I won six.”

Mourinho seemed like he was highly offended, and this is what he had to say: “I want to win, but I want to win cleanly and fairly. If I can’t win cleanly, I’d rather lose. Guardiola told me something like this. He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly.” The Portuguese further claimed that he would like to congratulate his opponent for being superior to his side in case he loses a game, further targetting Man City’s 100+ charges, which haven’t been proven yet.

Pep Guardiola responded in style

Recently, Guardiola didn’t hold back and he had his reply ready. This is what the Spaniard had to say: “It was a joke. But he’s another one in the huge list that want the team relegated to League One or the Conference. I would say to José the same: we are innocent until proven guilty. After that we will see what happens. It is what it is, it was completely a joke.’

Pep further added an apology to Mourinho, saying: “ If I have offended him I’m so sorry. The fact is he has three and I have six. This is a fact. But the intention was completely fine.”

Pep further praised Mourinho for his achievements

Pep Guardiola further added to his statements, saying: “Both with our teams, him[Mourinho] with Chelsea and me with Man City, we can sit at the table with Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger, right? For the many titles we won.”

Roman Abramovich owned the Premier League titles that Mourinho won in 2005, 2006, and 2015. The Premier League is looking into Chelsea’s finances from 2012 to 2019 after the club’s current owners voluntarily disclosed that “incomplete financial information” had been supplied while Abramovich was in charge.

Chelsea has been fined £8.6 million by UEFA for the admission, and the Football Association is now looking into the matter. In November 2023, certain reports revealed that records from both inside and outside the time period under investigation sparked new inquiries about whether Abramovich had consistently broken football regulations to Chelsea’s advantage.
