New Delhi: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was fined 20 per cent of his match fee, while Australian batter Travis Head was “sanctioned” by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a heated exchange of words during the second Test at the Adelaide Oval.
Both cricketers were found guilty of breaching the ICC’s code of conduct following a disciplinary hearing on Monday.
The ICC statement confirmed that Siraj has been penalised 20 per cent of his match fee for breaching article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
Siraj’s fine for breaching Article 2.5
The rule relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.”
The ICC statement also stated that Head was “sanctioned” for breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
However, the Aussie batter escaped a fine for breaching the rule that relates to the “abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match.”
Demerit points for both cricketers
Siraj and Head, who also received one demerit point each on their disciplinary records, were found guilty of making their first offence in the last 24 months.
The ICC statement stated that both Head and Siraj admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Sri Lankan match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.
Head and Siraj were involved in a heated spat on Day 2 of the day-night Test which Australia won by 10 wickets inside three days on Sunday. After his sensational 141-ball knock of 140, Head was given an aggressive send-off by Siraj, who castled him with a low full toss. The incident happened after both had already indulged in a brief confrontation.
Siraj was booed by the Adelaide crowd following the heated exchange.
Head later clarified that he had said “well bowled” to Siraj and that he was disappointed at the Indian bowler’s reaction. However, Siraj disputed that claim and said that the Aussie batter had abused him.
Following India’s win in Perth and Australia’s victory in Adelaide, the two teams are tied 1-1 in the five-match series.
