Most sixes in Tests: New Zealand pacer equals Chris Gayle’s record in farewell match

New Delhi: New Zealand pacer Tim Southee achieved a special feat in his farewell Test match for his country as he equalled West Indies legend Chris Gayle on the elite list of players with the most sixes in Test cricket. Southee came out to bat at number 10 during New Zealand’s first innings of the ongoing third Test against England in Hamilton and played a quickfire knock of 28 runs off just 10 balls.

It was an emotional start for Southee in his farewell Test match as he walked with his daughter to a guard of honour from the England players in Hamilton. One of New Zealand’s greatest pacers of all time, Southee has announced ahead of the Test match that it will be his last for the Black Caps. He also said that he will consider his future in white-ball cricket.

While he has won numerous matches for New Zealand with his heroics with the ball, Southee has also been an explosive hitter in Test cricket and is known for his six-hitting prowess. Southee slammed three sixes en route to his 10-ball 28 against England to Saturday to take his six-hitting tally to 98 in Test cricket and equal Gayle in the list of batters with the most sixes in the longest format.

West Indies legend Gayle, who was known for his explosive hitting, smashed 98 sixes in 103 Test matches in his career. Meanwhile, Southee managed to equal his tally in his 107th and last Test for New Zealand. Gayle and Southee are now joint 4th on the list of players with the most sixes in Test history. England captain Ben Stokes leads the list with 133 sixes in 110 matches in his career so far.

Brendon McCullum – 107 sixes
