New Delhi: Australian Test captain Pat Cummins aims to return to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League 2025 by expressing his confidence in regaining full fitness ahead of the cash-rich T20 league and the World Test Championship final against South Africa starting June 11 at the Lord’s.
Cummins is recovering from an ankle injury he sustained during the final Test against India in Sydney. The 31-year-old battled through pain to lead Australia to their first Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in more than a decade.
After further scans, Cummins was deemed unfit and was ruled out of the two-Test series in Sri Lanka and the ongoing Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The injury break coincided with the birth of his second child.
“It’s been an amazing month or so just having full focus on family time and not having to do too much training or have my eye on a tour. Just being totally present has been really special,” Cummins told ‘cricket.com.au’.
Cummins eyeing IPL return
Cummins, who has resumed training, is aiming to return to action with his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. Cummins led SRH to the final in last year’s IPL. The 2025 edition begins on March 22 with SRH beginning their campaign at home against Rajasthan Royals on March 23.
“That’s the aim at this stage — start bowling over the next week or so, building up, and should be right for IPL,” he said.
Cummins is targeting to make IPL the platform to get in his best possible shape for the crucial red-ball fixtures – the WTC final against South Africa and the three-Test series in the Caribbean.
Cummins hopes that the high-intensity matches in IPL will help him find his groove after a long break. Australia, who sealed their place in the WTC 2025 final after edging past India 3-1 in the BGT, will face off against South Africa, who finished at the top of the WTC table.
