‘Whole world will be watching’: Gukesh, Carlsen clash to headline Norway Chess

New Delhi: Newly-crowned world chess champion Gukesh Dommaraju will lock horns with Magnus Carlsen, the world’s highest-rated player, in a highly-awaited contest at Norway Chess 2025. Gukesh, who recently became the youngest-ever world champion, will face off against local favourite Carlsen in the prestigious tournament, starting in Stavanger from May 26 to June 6, 2025.

Gukesh, 18, has enjoyed a stellar year on the chess board, claiming success in Tata Steel Masters, playing a key role in India’s Chess Olympiad gold medal-winning campaign, cruising to win in the Candidates Tournament, and finally clinching the top prize in classical chess – FIDE World Championship 2024 title in Singapore.

Gukesh looking forward to the big challenge

“I’m excited to face the strongest players in the world again in Norway and also the Armageddons will be fun,” said Gukesh in a media release.

Gukesh, who finished third in Stavanger in the 2023 edition, will enter the 2025 edition of the tournament as the world champion and will be ready to challenge Carlsen on home soil.

All eyes on Gukesh vs Carlsen

“The whole world will be watching, and the Norway Chess team is proud to host such an incredible event here in Stavanger.”, said Kjell Madland, founder and tournament director of Norway Chess.

Norway Chess has emerged as one of the world’s premier chess tournaments, featuring top male and female players in a distinctive six-player double round-robin format.

Carlsen is the most successful player in the history of Norway Chess, which was launched in 2013. Carlsen has won six titles (classical), including four on the trot from 2019 to 2022. American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura broke Carlsen’s winning streak with a win in 2023 before the Norwegian claimed his favourite title again earlier this year. Carlsen has also won three Blitz titles in Norway. Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin won the first two editions of Norway Chess in 2013 and 2014.
