Ashwin retirement marks the end of India’s biggest match-winning partnership in Tests

New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement from Test cricket not only left a massive void in the Indian team but also marked the end of the biggest match-winning partnership for India in Tests. Ashwin called it quits from international cricket following the drawn Test between Australia and India in Gabba, Brisbane, retiring as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket.

Ashwin’s unforeseen retirement ended his successful partnership with left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin and Jadeja forged one of the most impactful partnerships in Test history and the most successful in Indian Test cricket. Both spinners bowled in partnership and complimented each other perfectly.

Ashwin and Jadeja’s unforgettable partnership

Ashwin and Jadeja played 58 Test matches together and bagged 587 wickets between them and became the most successful bowling pair for India. Ashwin and Jadeja surpassed the remarkable haul of 501 wickets of the legendary pair of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh during the first Test against England in Hyderabad earlier this year.

It is because of the spin twins India have managed to build a nearly impenetrable fortress at home and emerged as the most dominant side on home soil in the last decade. The spin duo has helped India dominate home Tests against every opponent, proving to be a nightmare for the opposition batters.

Following Ashwin’s retirement announcement, Ashwin penned a heartfelt tribute to his partner-in-crime via a story on Instagram.

Ashwin and Jadeja to reunite at CSK

While the stellar partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja has ended at the international level the spin twins will reunite at the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. CSK retained Jadeja for Rs 18 crore on retention deadline day and bought Ashwin for Rs 9.75 crore at the IPL mega-auction in November in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Ashwin will make a comeback to his hometown franchise after a gap of nine years. The wily off-spinner played for the Super Kings from 2008 to 2015.
