Year-ender 2024: 7 major plane crashes including Jeju Air and Azerbaijan Airlines

New Delhi: The year 2024 witnessed several terrible accidents when it comes to the aviation industry. Those flight accidents left hundreds of people dead and many injured, shrouding the families of the deceased with grief and sorrow. Major accidents like the Jeju Air plane crash of South Korea and the Azerbaijan Airlines crash have shocked the world and we can only pray that 2025 becomes an accident-free year for the aviation industry. Major flight accidents in 2024

South Korea

Recently, the deadliest flight accident of the year took place. The Jeju Air passenger aircraft crashed while it was trying to land at the Muan International Airport in South Korea while returning from Bangkok. It is one of the deadliest aviation disasters in the history of South Korea. The plan had 181 people on board and the crash killed 179 of them. The terrible tragedy has sent the country into a state of mourning.

Brazil

On August 11 in Brazil, Voepass regional flight 2283 which was flying from from Cascavel to Sao Paulo, crashed in the town of Vinhedo. The plane was carrying 62 people onboard and the crash killed all of them. Brazil witnessed another plane crash on December 22 which killed all 10 people on board and injured 17 people on the ground.

Kazakhstan

Azerbaijan Airlines international flight J2-8243 on December 25 crashed near Kazakhstan’s Aktau while flying from Baku in the country to Russia’s Grozny. Initially, it was reported that the flight crashed while trying emergency landing after it faced technical difficulties mid-flight. The crash killed 39 people and injured 29. Later, it was reported that the aircraft was hit by a Russian missile.

Nepal

Nepal’s Saurya Airlines had a small passenger plane CRJ-200 aircraft and little did anyone knew the accident it would be involved in. On July 24, while the plane was taking off from Kathmandu to the Pokhara airport, it crashed and caught fire. The accident killed 18 people and only one person survived it, the captain of the plane.

Malawi

The plane crash in Malawi was terrible because of the magnitude of the loss. On June 10, Saulos Klaus Chilima, Malawi’s Vice President was travelling on a military plane along with nine others, including Shanil Dzimbiri, the former first lady of the country. The plane was travelling from Lilongwe to Mzuzu when it crashed and killed everyone on board. At least 41,000 people attended his state funeral.

Russia

Amid the Russia-Ukraine War, an Ukrainian rocket on January 24 destroyed a IL-76 transport aircraft of Russia over Belgorod. The plane had 74 people on board and all were killed in the attack. The plane was carrying Ukrainian Prisoners of War and the casualties included 68 Ukrainian soldiers.

Iran

Like the crash in Malawi, this one is significant due to the magnitude of the loss that the accident resulted in. On May 19, Ebrahim Raisi, the President of Iran was travelling with six other passengers and crew of a Bell 212 helicopter which was manufactured in the US. The plane crashed in the Varzeqan region’s mountain terrain near the border of Azerbaijan and it killed everyone on board.
